Trincomalee
One of the world's finest natural harbours, with quiet beaches and offshore reefs
OVERVIEW
Trincomalee sits on a large natural harbour on the east coast, with the calm, clear-water beaches of Nilaveli and Uppuveli nearby, plus Pigeon Island National Park just offshore for snorkeling among reef sharks and coral.
HISTORY
Trincomalee's harbour has been strategically important for over a thousand years, used by traders, colonial navies, and militaries in turn; the Koneswaram temple on its headland has drawn pilgrims for centuries despite being destroyed and rebuilt more than once through the region's history.
