OVERVIEW
Jaffna, at the northern tip of the island, has a culture, cuisine, and rhythm distinct from the rest of Sri Lanka — shaped by centuries of Tamil heritage, a flat palmyra-palm landscape, and its own colonial history under the Portuguese and Dutch.
HISTORY
Jaffna was the seat of an independent Tamil kingdom for centuries before Portuguese and later Dutch colonization. It was largely closed off to tourism during the civil war and has only reopened to travelers in the years since, making it one of the least-visited but most distinctive regions on the island.
