Mirissa is a crescent-shaped beach on the south coast, popular for its relaxed pace, and known internationally as one of the most reliable places on earth to see blue whales, alongside sperm whales and dolphins depending on the season.

Once a quiet fishing village, Mirissa's fishing harbour is still active alongside the tourism that's grown around its beach and whale-watching boats over the past two decades.

TRAVEL TIPS

Whale-watching boats leave early (around 6-7am) — choose an operator that limits boat numbers and keeps a respectful distance from the whales
Some visitors find the boat swells rough; those prone to seasickness should plan accordingly
