OVERVIEW

The Dambulla Cave Temple (the Golden Temple of Dambulla) is a complex of five caves built into a single rock face, filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings that date back over two thousand years. It sits about 20 minutes from Sigiriya, making the two an easy pairing.

HISTORY

The caves have been a place of worship since at least the 1st century BC, expanded and repainted by successive kings over the centuries. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved cave temple complexes in Asia.
